March: Lion and Lamb Month.  Is winter around here so unbearable that we need to create prognosticating diversions to help us get through it to the Spring and  Summer months?    We seem to concede January to Winter and all that goes with its frozen tundra,  but then in February, we start looking for signs of hope that a change in seasons approaches.   We drag a  pet groundhog out of its crate into the light of (the sometimes pre-dawn!) day and look to see if it casts a shadow.   The outcome of that unscientific demonstration forecasts either an early Spring or continuing Winter.   Seems to me, Phil should always see his shadow from all the tv, video and flash cameras aimed at him.   You know March’s saying:  “in like a lion and out like a lamb” and vice-versa, describing the  weather to be either roaring or mild as it enters and leaves the month.    Spring (not the meteorological one) arrives in March, but this is Ohio and we know Spring-like weather doesn’t necessarily follow the calendar around here.   So we sustain our hope for more moderate conditions  by declaring that April showers bring May flowers.  

 

The upside to all this is that in each of these examples, the vision is toward optimism.   Unless   you’re plowing driveways, most people are hoping for that early season change to be predicted by the Pennsylvania rodent.   March can enter the lion and still be within Phil’s six-week window as long as we can still hope for milder weather by the end of the month.   Even a wet April can be justified with visions  of beautiful budding flowers and a productive growing season.  

 

We don’t have any such predictors to help us get through the seasons of our lives and this world,   but there is no less reason to set our vision toward the hopeful and optimistic.   Paul directs the church in Philippians 4:8-9,  Whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable – if anything is excellent or praiseworthy – think about such things. . . and the God of peace will be with you.   Just prior to this in chapter 3:13-15, Paul also declares, . . .Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.  All of us who are mature should take such a view of things. . .    And then there is what Jesus himself had to say in Luke 9:62,  No one who puts his hand to the plow and looks back is fit for service in the kingdom of God.

 

My whole point is that as people of God saved by Christ, we are called to be a people of joy.   The very announcement of Christ’s birth was qualified by the angel’s declaration that this event would be Good News of great joy for all the people  (Luke 2:10).   As we move through this season leading to the Cross and Resurrection, it is certainly a useful, if humbling time for reflection upon our selves, our faith and our lives, but the Good News of great joy remains to be claimed by looking forward beyond the Cross and toward the Resurrection.   This is the view and vision of fulfilled hope and not merely wishful thinking.   This is the kind of vision that sustains hope no matter the weather or season our living encounters.   This visioning is true for us personally and for God’s church.   I invite you to  check your faith-weather forecast, then cast your vision toward the Cross where all negatives can be  put to death, then press-on to your Resurrection.   Take hold of the plow to life and don’t look back.   Christ has a place and need for you in His Body of this church.   Catch His vision.   Commit to the excellent and praiseworthy.   Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer  (Romans 12:12).    Find your resurrection this Easter.    See You This Sunday!     Pastor Dave

LIL’ LAMBS SALE

McBIBLE STUDY – Friday, March 1 at 10:00 a.m.

We are moving to the Church! McDonalds’ lobby has proven to be a little too noisy and difficult for group study, so we are moving to the church parlor until we find another site to try. We are starting a new study with the books Jesus Calling by Sarah Young and The Sower: Follow in His Steps by Franklin Graham. It’s a great time to bring your favorite beverage or fix some coffee or tea in the church kitchen. Join us and bring a friend as we start this new study

HEADS UP. . . A WONDERFUL NEW TV MINI-SERIES BEGINNING MARCH 3

 

 

The Bible is an epic five-week, 10 hour television mini-series premiering March 3, 2013 on the History Channel from Emmy Award winning husband and wife team, Mark Burnett and Roma Downey.   For two hours each Sunday night millions of viewers will see the Bible come to life in a way never before seen.   The final episode of the series will air on Easter Sunday and will feature the death and resurrection of Jesus.   To help insure accuracy of the miniseries, many Christian scholars served as advisers and hundreds of Christian leader have given their endorsement. – (Outreach Magazine).

 

The 10-hour, five part docudrama, which premiers March 3 on the History Channel will span the Bible from Genesis to Revelation, presenting some of its best-known stories, including Noah’s Ark, the Exodus, Daniel in the Lion’s den and the crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus.   Be sure to mark your calendar as you will not want to miss this spectacular mini-series.

February 2013               Financial Report

 

January and February have brought a steep decline in income.   When compared to 2012 for the same period there was a decrease of $2,374.   Operating expenses have remained close to the same as last year but as you can see below there is not enough monthly income to cover current expenses.  We have paid all the current expenses by using appropriate savings reserves.   However, if this trend continues I estimate these funds will be depleted sometime this spring or at the latest, summer.          I would ask that you keep this church and the finance committee in your prayers.
