DECEMBER2012

Joy to you this Advent season in preparation for Christmas! Let me invite you to include Christ in this special time of year even before Christmas Eve. The First Sunday of Advent is December 2. Worship gatherings will include the traditional lighting of candles on the Sanctuary Advent Wreath with a brief devotion.

Plans are to offer a weekly Christmas-themed, family-friendly movie each Advent Sunday evening. Doors will open at 5:30 pm, the movie will begin at 6:00 pm and of course we can’t have a movie without popcorn and snacks! Movies should last no longer than about 80-90 minutes, so you can be on your way about 7:30 each night. We also hope to promote this to residents of the Cortland community.

Last Christmas Eve, we staged a Living Nativity portrayal on the church front lawn. Although the air was cold, spirits were warm; passing vehicles slowed for a look and listen; and I think most if not all who participated found it rewarding and worthwhile. So, here’s your invitation to help make this happen again, but it cannot happen without your help. If you participated last year, Bertha will be calling; if you’re willing to participate this year, please call Bertha. I know you will be blessed and also be a Christmas blessing.

The church is being decorated Saturday morning December 1. I know it has been a tradition for some families to take a family photo in the Sanctuary at the Christmas Eve services, so bring cameras and smiles.

Speaking of Christmas Eve and in consideration of changing practices and traditions, we are moving up both services by one hour (to 6:00 PM and 8:00 PM) to see how this fits people’s Christmas Eve schedules this year.

Christmas is generally experienced as a happy season of good will and cheerful spirits with gatherings of family and friends. Even so, it can also bring sadness remembering loved-ones-passed-on and relationships estranged or broken. This is a season when we, as people of Christian faith and followers of Christ’s Way, should feel especially drawn to follow the Light of his Star to seek his presence in the place and among the people of his worship and community: his church.

Conversation turned this direction one recent Monday evening with several men meeting in the parlor for Burger and Bible (though it’s not all or even usually ‘burgers’!). At issue was the (mis) perception that "I can worship God on my own, in my own way, in my own place and in my own time." Well, it could be said that, "You can, if you will, and if you take the time to actually do it," but I doubt that many do. It’s just an excuse. Consider the example of any team activity: baseball, softball, football, soccer, cheerleading; it doesn’t matter. Regardless of the skill, talent or effort of individuals, if they do not interact as a group or team, they cannot succeed. No individual can replace the roles of any number that comprise a team. How much more for Christian believers, Christ’s church. This was never more illustrated than by a church member stopping-in unannounced with a heavy heart. He had a burden and a need to share it. He found listening ears, open hearts, supportive encouragement, wisdom from God’s Word and prayer lifted in faith. He went on his way in peace, knowing trials still remained, but also that he had a supportive fellowship committed in faith and love.

Advent is an ideal time to reestablish your church and faith family connection. Advent, the Season of Preparation to welcome Christ into the world, serves as the first season of the church year. We have a family gathering every Sunday and you are invited. If not now, when?

Season’s Greetings. Pastor Dave

OPERATION CHRISTMAS CHILD–SHOE BOX DONATIONS

A huge thank you for blessing so many children this year. From our congregation alone we packed 138 shoe boxes! Thanks so much United Methodist Men and all the other generous givers that gave money for shipping and also those who gave money for shopping. We had a great turn out for shopping and packing boxes –I sure appreciated all that came to participate! All my helpers during collection week deservea big thanks along with Bertha andJackCyphert, AlanWilliams, MirianWarner, and PamO’Dell for loading and delivering many cartons. I am writing this thank you from Charlotte, North Carolina where I have the privilege of processing shoe boxes at the largest of O.C.C.’ processing centers. It has brought me such joy to see how Samaritan’s Purse touches the lives of so many people with these "GO" (Gospel Opportunities) boxes! Never underestimate the power of a simple shoe box!

God Bless You,Debbie Miller
