February 2015 Newsletter

As I greet you this month, I can’t help but see a red sticker of Snoopy doing his dance on the frame of my computer screen.   It’s red, noticeable and it says, “Happy Birthday.”   It gives me  mixed thoughts.   On one hand, I’m not finding birthdays and my age much to get excited about these days when I think about the number.   On the other hand, there is really much to be thankful-for and excited-about when considering each day and birthday as the gift of life.

At the most recent Monday night Burger and Bible gathering, we read a brief description on the wonder of the human eye citing research of Dr David N Menton (“Can Evolution Produce an Eye?  Not a Chance!” 1994).   “One cell, for example, in the retina of the human eye            (of which there are approximately ten million such cells working together like a finely tuned machine), performs a function simultaneously every thousandth of a second that would require five-hundred non-linear differential equations one hundred times each to accomplish.   It would take the Cray Super Computer years to accomplish what the human eye can accomplish in seconds.”

In his book, Origin of the Species (1872), Charles Darwin admits, “To suppose that the eye with all of its inimitable contrivances for adjusting to focus to different distances for many different amounts of light and for the correction of the spherical and chromatic aberrations could have been formed by natural selection seems, I freely confess, absurd in the highest degree.”

For me, this was “the wow-factor, baby” to quote an unidentified tv personality.    It inspires me to pause and brings to mind the words of Psalm 139:14,  “I praise you because  I am fearfully and wonderfully made…”    We should never lose sight of David’s declaration nor its significance to the gift of life and Divine being in each of us.   Each of us is an embodiment of God’s Life, Spirit and Grace.   We need to treasure this privileged status and relationship.

I present this to consider and ponder in your hearts.   Might your status and relationship with God be described as something carried-around as a divine assurance policy, or as a treasured opportunity that gives meaning and power to live every day?    Happy Birthday to us all!       See You Sunday?         Pastor Dave

UNITED METHODIST WOMEN

The ladies like to thank everyone who provided personal care items for the ladies of Hannah’s House.  We were able to take several large gifts bags of items to them.  They were very much appreciated. Our meeting for the month will be on Wednesday, February 18th at 10:30 am. In the church parlor.  All women of the church are invited to join us for devotions and a business meeting followed by lunch at an area restaurant.

TO  EVERYONE……………….. THANKS FOR HELPING

Thank you to everyone that helped make a difference to 18 seniors at Cortview with Christmas gifts.

Thank you for making breads for 24 seniors at Creekside. Creekside residents received 4 loaves, 2 oranges, a cookie and candy.

Thank you to everyone who brought items for gift bags and those who took time to go to Hannah’s House to celebrate Christmas with women that are trying to change their lives.

Thank you to everyone that bought a poinsettia. We have _24 in memory or in honor of our loved ones.  The flowers beautify the sanctuary for Christmas Eve services.

Thank you for supporting all outreach programs that past year. We are a small church with BIG hearts. We do everything in the name of Jesus Christ that is why we are able to make a true difference.

We are so blessed.

Katie Watson.

THANKS

Please accept my personal thanks to each and every one of you for your prayers, support, soup and cornbread on make a Difference Day, the poinsettia at Christmas, your many cards and phone calls.  A special thanks to Pastor Dave who always found time to call, check on me, and prayer for me before my procedures or hospitalization.  God has truly blessed me.  I still have the basic concern, but I have not felt so good in some time. Thank you.

CHURCH CARD MINISTRY A SUCCESS

Thanks to the many members of the congregation for taking time to write notes in the cards, and to the United Methodist Women for financing the gifts inside the card. Cards were delivered to the following areas: Stokes VA Outpatient Department in Warren; Wade Park In-Patient V.A. Hospital in Cleveland; Concord Care Center and Washington Square Nursing Home’s Veterans Unit where the largest amount was delivered to the VA outpatient Dept. The staff said they were looking forward to us coming as there were so many veterans hospitalized in Cleveland this year.  Washington Square has a veteran’s unit ward of twenty six and was very grateful we remembered them. Concord Card Veterans were alert and very happy to be remembered.

Again thank you for your time and support – Continue to keep them in your prayers.

STAFF – HONORED   SUNDAY, DECEMBER 28, 2014

Staff Pastor Parish Relations committee voted this year to honor our staff with a bonus since we have been unable to raise their salaries. The Staff Pastor Parish Relations committee also wishes to that the Men’s Group and the United Methodist Women for helping us make this possible.

The congregation “Christmas gift to the Pastor and Becky” was also given on that Sunday. We thank them both for their service, love and concern for each of us.  God’s messages they share with us.  Also we wish to thank the Pastor, Becky, Bertha, Jill and George for their love of God they display in their task.  We are truly grateful they have accepted these positions and for their service to God and God’s church.  Custodians were not given a bonus as they receive a paid vacation.  We also thank them for their  services.   Look forward  to a good year  -

JUNIOR CHURCH

Remember, Cortland United Methodist Church provides a nursery for the wee ones, a junior church for all the other children at the 10:30 am service after pastor’s children sermon.  If children do attend the 8 am service we would meet their needs also.  WE have a great time – learning about God – the way we should act, completing crafts, projects, acting out Bible stories or watching a video.

The class has been growing in size. Please invite someone to attend or offer to bring them.  God loves the children – We enjoy sharing “His” good news with them.

AFTER-SCHOOL PROGRAM                          WEDNESDAY’S      4:30 – 6:00 pm.

Many thanks to all the people who helped with the after-school program last semester. We are looking forward to a great finish to the year. We ask all church members to encourage any child that may know or who lives next to them about the program.  Doors open at 4:00 pm  with a healthy snack – homework completed – then enjoy the activity, fun and good friends. We look forward to students returning and many new members. High School students are welcome to come as helpers – a good way to complete your school volunteer program. Remember if first time attending, student’s parents need to come to register them.  Let’s make this a great experience.  Information can be obtained by calling the church office 330-637-2571 or Shirley at 330-720-3147.

The sympathy of the congregation was extended to Debbie Miller and family in the loss of her father.
